An Arkansas resident has claimed the historic $1.82 billion Powerball jackpot, the second-largest in US lottery history. The anonymous winner claimed the $8.34.9 million pre-tax cash payment, the Arkansas lottery said on Thursday.
The numbers that secured the $1.82 billion Powerball jackpot were 4, 25, 31, 52, 59 and the Powerball 19.
If the lucky winner chose the $1.82 billion prize, the payout would have received in 30 annual payments over 2 years.
Under Arkansas state law, lottery winners of $500,000 or more can choose to keep their identity private for years after claiming the prize.
“Everyone was anxiously waiting for the winner to step forward, but we are happy they took the time to seek legal counsel and financial advice first, as we recommended. We are thrilled that the winner is from Arkansas,” state lottery Executive Director Sharon Strong said.
The prize is the second-biggest Powerball jackpot, after Edwin Castro’s $2.04 billion win in California in November 2022. The prize has come after 47 drawings without a winner, the longest in the game’s history.
The unidentified winner had bought the ticket at a Murphy USA in Cabot, Arkansas, about 25 miles northeast of the state capital, Little Rock. The store earned $50,000.
“We’re proud to celebrate this moment, not only for out Arkansas winner and for Murphy USA, the Arkansas-based company that sold the winning ticket, but also for the positive impact this historic jackpot will have on our state and our mission to raise funds for in-state scholarships,” Strong added.
This marks the second Powerball jackpot won in Arkansas, following a $25 million prize on January 2, 2010.
