In a step towards helping to create a strong ecosystem for electric vehicles, the Indian Railways is providing space to set up its charging spots at the New Delhi and Nizamuddin railway stations.
The parking lots at the two stations have been reportedly identified to set up charging stations for e-vehicles. Each space will be equipped with five fast-charging DC points, which will be capable of charging 10 cars at a time. DC chargers are faster than AC chargers. While it takes around six hours to fully charge an e-vehicle by AC charger, only around 40 minutes to an hour is required by DC.
The total estimated cost to provide e-vehicles charging infrastructure will come around Rs 15 lakh at each station parking lot, which will be Rs 3 lakh per charging point. It will include funding, procurement and construction, operation and maintenance of the charging station, as per an IANS report.
The step will not only help in promoting the use of green energy but also generate revenues for Railways. According to a Railway Ministry official, the lack of charging facilities restrains the growth of e-vehicles in the city and therefore an effective charging infrastructure is required for creating the ecosystem for smooth operations of these vehicle. This will not only generate revenue for the national transporter, the official told IANS.
The charging points will be set up and operated by BSES - Rajdhani Power Ltd (BRPL).
