The court has directed the CBI to set up a special investigation team (SIT) to look into prima facie charges against Sinha. The SIT will be headed by its current director and Special Public Prosecutor RS Cheema will assist the team on legal issues in the matter, the court said.
The panel has found that the charges levelled against Ranjit Sinha were correct.

Backed by Central Bureau of Investigation, its former Chief Ranjit Sinha on Monday alleged in the Supreme Court that a "hidden hand" was a "controlling mind" of lawyer Prashant Bhushan, who has showered against him barrage of charges for purportedly interfering and scuttling the probe into coalgate.
SC today allowed new CBI Director Anil Kumar Sinha to take charge of the investigation and prosecution in the 2G scam cases, over three weeks after it had removed his predecessor from the probe following allegations of trying to protect some accused.
A three-member high-powered committee, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and including Chief Justice of India HL Dattu and Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, met on Tuesday to select the new CBI Director.
Sinha has been hitting the headlines regularly, ever since he took charge on 3 December 2012. The BJP had opposed his appointment then because the Lokpal Bill, which called for a collegium to appoint the CBI director, was then in the works.
The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has sought the names of senior IPS officers fulfilling the eligibility criteria to make a panel for the selection committee to choose the CBI director, official sources said.
A bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu refused to give credence to the submission of Sinha's lawyer on the issue after advocate Prashant Bhushan also told the court on oath that he did not receive any information from DIG-level officer Santosh Rastogi.
Although the SC did not divulge much information, it said that prima facie it appeared that allegations against Ranjit Sinha meeting the accused in the 2G scam is "credible" and "acceptable".
"Vide separate order the matter has been referred to CBI for further investigation under the provisions of the CrPC. Copy of the order passed be sent to Director, CBI and to all the DIGs, CBI who are supervising the investigation of all coal blocks allocation cases." Special CBI Judge Bharat Parashar said.
The court said that Bhushan must disclose the source of information regarding the guest list at CBI director's residence and CBI file notings. The court has asked Bhushan to give the name of the whistleblower in a sealed envelope.
Bhushan had filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking its direction to Sinha to recuse himself from investigation and prosecution in 2G case, alleging that he is trying to protect some influential accused in the scam.
The chances are Sinha will stay on till the end of his tenure, but the problems highlighted by his tenancy of this sensitive office – lack of independence, pressures from powerful people – need addressing.
Senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan has alleged that Ranjit Sinha met coal scam accused at his residence as disclosed in the residence diary. The court has asked the CBI Director to file a response in 10 days and postponed the matter for further hearing till September 19.

CBI chief Ranjit Sinha has been accused of trying to get a clean chit for the Maran brothers who have been chargesheeted in the case.
The issue was raised by the NGO, Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL), one of the PIL petitioners on whose plea 122 licences for 2G spectrum were cancelled by the apex court.
The apex court has directed Bhushan to submit details on September 4. Meanwhile, talking to Network18, CBI director Ranjit Sinha rejected the allegations.
CBI has objected to the claims made by Bhushan in his petition that its Director had been reprimanded in coal scam by the SC saying that there was no order in connection with this.
The former coal secretary PC Parakh today said, “Prime Minister could have overruled my decision; everyone was equally responsible in the matterâ€, adding that he was not sure why the CBI had named him.
The Central Bureau of Investigation moved to the Supreme Court to modify an earlier order on the coalgate scam. It seeks change in the order passed on May 8 which directed the agency not to share any information with the government.
