Driver unions have welcomed the move since there are over 1,000 quadricycles in Bengaluru and running them at regular auto fares has been a struggle.
While Bajaj Auto is working on reintroducing its Qute quadricycle in a greener avatar, others like Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and Hero MotoCorp are also working on a timeline for foraying into this segment.
Nitin Gadkari hopes to get Cabinet nod for changes to the Motor Vehicle Act soon, which he adds would be based on the US and UK norms. He hopes to move amendments to the Act in this session.
The new MV Act should be tabled in Parliament in the next session. It will also probably contain norms for e-rickshaws which have been banned by the Delhi High Court unless a proper law was in place to govern issues such as weight and safety parameters.

The Transport Secretary, Vijay Chhibber has said that the quadricycle norms will be notified in approximately 10 days and will kick in with immediate effect reports CNBC-TV18's Ronojoy Banerjee. Chibber has said that the Transport Ministry is supporting the creation of the new vehicle category.
CNBC-TV18‘s Ronojoy Banerjee reports that due to the reluctance of the automobile industry to reach a consensus on the need to create a new category of vehicles or quadricycles, the government has now decided to form a high-level inter-ministerial group (IMG) to take a call on this issue.
The panel set up for quadricycles norms has submitted it report to the government and has suggested for phased alignment with European Union norms.
