National Technology Day: On May 11, 1998, India became only the sixth country in the world to possess nuclear weapons. The date is commemorated as National Technology Day.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 11 inaugurated the programme marking National Technology Day 2023 in New Delhi. The programme also marked the commencement of the celebration of the 25th year of National Technology Day, which will be held from May 11-14.
Defence Minister Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh and other dignitaries were also present at the event. The Prime Minister also released a commemorative stamp and coin on the occasion.

The day is observed to mark the successful nuclear tests in Pokhran.

National Technology Day, which commemorates India successfully carrying out nuclear tests at Pokhran in 1998, is also meant to symbolise the country's technological creativity and innovations.
On this day in 1998, India successfully conducted first of its five nuclear tests under the then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The nuclear tests that took place on May 11, 1998 saw late President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam leading the Indian team of scientists to successfully test-fire the Shakti-1 nuclear missile at Rajasthan’s Pokhran test range.
