India may get its first auto-shredding center early next year. This new integrated automotive recycling unit will be a joint venture between MSTC and Mahindra Intertrade, and CNBC-TV18's Shweta Kothari reports that it will be located either in Gujarat or in Maharashtra.
The idea behind the JV is to meet India's annual scrap requirement of 5-6 million tonnes (MT), which at present is done through imports, the market for which is estimated in the range of USD 1.8 billion (about Rs 12,000 crore).
India is considering introducing a policy to scrap old vehicles, like the cash-for-clunkers programme the United States tried during the global economic recession to boost auto sales.
Sumit Issar has also been appointed Managing Director of Mahindra Steel Service Centre Limited (MSSCL), a joint venture between Mahindra and Metal One Corporation, Japan.
This is Mahindra's seventh steel processing facility and the third in the Pune region. The raw stock for the facility would be imported from China Steel Global, Taiwan as well as sourced locally
Speaking with CNBC-TV18‘s Farah Bookwala Vhora, the MD of Mahindra Intertrade, Harsh Kumar talks about the unique selling point (USP) of this facility.
