Minister of State for Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, said that automobile manufacturers are also encouraged to use coastal shipping for transportation of vehicles.
"Crisil Research estimates coastal transportation of coal to increase to 63 million tonne per annum (MTPA) by fiscal 2023, from 32 MTPA as of fiscal 2017 as structural bottlenecks ease," it said in a statement.
Promoting coastal shipping of just six commodities, including coal, cement and steel, could result in a huge Rs 40,000 crore annual savings, according to the ambitious Sagarmala programme, which emphasises on port-led development of the country.
"The government envisions increasing the share of coastal shipping in modal cargo mix to 10 percent by 2020 from the current share so as to reduce the over-dependence on road and rail sectors for domestic cargo transportation," Minister of State for Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan told Rajya Sabha in a written reply today.

To boost coastal shipping, the government has asked all the 12 major ports to accord priority berthing to such vessels and facilitate faster movement of cargo, as a short-term measure.
"Post this acquisition, Allcargo now owns a total of five cargo vessels making it one of the largest players in the logistics industry," the company said in a statement without disclosing the financial consideration for acquisition.
