Several US airlines have hiked checked baggage fees recently. The top 20 airlines in the world collectively earned billions of dollars in baggage fees last year.
The rate of rejection of check-in bags at Mumbai airport has risen to 0.73 percent in May 2023 from 0.31 percent in December 2022
According to the current rules, passengers are permitted to carry up to 7 kilograms of cabin baggage and 15 kilograms of check-in baggage.
While providing discount to passengers having no check in luggage, low-cost carriers like AirAsia, Indigo and SpiceJet have approached the Directorate General of Civil Aviation to charge Rs 250 for the first luggage, Rs 500 for the second and Rs 1500 for the third.
Charging for unbundled services like check-in bags and preffered seats would increase the revenues for the airlines marginally.
