The Zephyrus G14 features a standard design and certainly doesn’t look like a heavy-duty mobile gaming machine. The notebook is relatively thin and light, weighing a meagre 1.7 kg. Apart from the AniMe Matrix display, nothing about this laptop screams ‘gaming’. Apart from being portable, the G14’s build quality is top-notch with a magnesium-aluminium alloy chassis and lid. It definitely feels like a premium ultrabook. The AniMe Matrix display is definitely a novelty feature but is the only thing that makes the G14 look like a gaming laptop.

The ROG Zephyrus G14 has a robust assortment of I/O for a 14-inch notebook. You get two standard USB ports, two USB Type-C ports, an HDMI 2.0b output and a headphone jack. Overall connectivity options are average, mainly because this is a gaming laptop without an Ethernet port. While getting a USB to Ethernet adapter is easy, you will only have a single USB port for accessories if you prefer wired gaming. The position on the USB port on the right also seemed annoying. Additionally, the G14 even loses out on the webcam.

Both the trackpad and keyboard on the G14 are great. Windows Precision drivers on the glass trackpad make it ideal for daily use. The keyboard also supports N-key rollover to register every keypress. The keyboard also features a 1.7mm travel distance, while the keys are well spaced out, making it ideal for gaming and typing. Additionally, the power button doubles as a fingerprint reader.

The G14 features a 14-inch display with a Full HD (1920x1080 pixels) or WQHD (2560x1440 pixels) IPS panel. The Full HD panel is available with up to a 120Hz refresh rate, while the WQHD panel option is limited to 60Hz. Our model arrived with the WQHD panel, which featured fantastic colour accuracy and excellent screen brightness for a gaming laptop. However, we’d suggest going for the high refresh rate display if you are getting the G14 in a beefier configuration.

Speaking of configurations, the Zephyrus G14 is powered by the AMD Ryzen 4000 H series processors. The CPU can be paired with up to an Nvidia RTX 2060 Max-Q GPU. However, you can also get the machine in Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 CPU options and Nvidia GTX 16 series graphics cards. Our model arrived with the Ryzen 9 4900HS CPU, Nvidia RTX 2060 Max-Q GPU, 16GB of DDR4 RAM and a 1TB PCIe SSD. In terms of raw performance, the G14 does a pretty good job, handling multitasking without breaking a sweat.

When it comes to gaming, there’s not a game that this laptop won’t be able to run with its heavy-duty CPU and GPU. On high settings, the G14 managed 143 fps on average in Overwatch. If you are looking at a more demanding title like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, you will get closer to 70 fps on average. Because the refresh rate on this panel is limited to 60Hz, you’d be better severed playing on the best possible settings until you get an average of 60fps. In the Cinebench R20 multi-core test, the G14 scored 4121 points, quite an impressive feat for a 14-inch notebook.

The ROG Zephyrus G14 packs a massive 76Whr battery that can deliver excellent battery life for a gaming laptop. We are talking anywhere between 7 to 10 hours of regular multitasking and watching movies. The G14 has one of the best batteries of any gaming laptop. To be able to fit such a massive battery in such a small chassis is quite impressive. The device takes around 40 minutes to charge to 60-percent with the included adapter.

The ROG Zephyrus G14 is a gaming laptop that can do it all. There is a more-than-capable 8-core CPU for video editing, a QHD panel for photo editing, an Nvidia RTX GPU for high-end gaming, and lasting battery life for travelling businessmen and women. The G14 has all the qualities of an ultrabook with very powerful hardware capable of running the most demanding games. The use of the new AMD Ryzen 4000 H series CPUs was another excellent move on Asus’ part. However, there are a few caveats here like the lack of a webcam and Ethernet port, but our first impression of this machine was overwhelmingly positive. Stay tuned for our full review of the G14 for a more in-depth look at this portable powerhouse.
