A student at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIM-C) has accused a fellow student of rape inside a boys' hostel on the campus, police said on Saturday.
Following this, the accused has been arrested following the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) by the survivor at Haridevpur Police Station.
The alleged assault occurred on Friday within the premises of the institute, according to the police.
The woman, who is also a student at IIM-C, claims she had been invited to the hostel under the pretext of a counselling session.
In her complaint, she stated that after being offered a drink at the hostel, she lost consciousness, allegedly due to it being laced with a sedative. Upon regaining consciousness, she realised she had been sexually assaulted.
The survivor further told police that the accused had issued threats to dissuade her from reporting the incident.
"The accused student was initially detained on Friday night and was later placed under formal arrest," a police officer familiar with the case has stated.
An investigation is currently underway to gather further evidence and determine whether additional charges are warranted.
This incident comes less than two weeks after another disturbing case surfaced in the city, where a student was reportedly gangraped inside a city law college.
