'Why give pass to Pakistan at this moment': Ex-envoy questions US on ceasefire after Operation Sindoor

The American leadership has disregarded the mood of Indian after the horrific killings in Pahalgam, Sibal said.

The Indian Air Force has said that Operation Sindoor is still ongoing.

After four days of precision strikes and drone attacks, the situation seems to be calm in the Indian Sub-Continent. While many are welcoming the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, some are questioning the intent of American leadership on the precarious matter.

US President Donald Trump was the first person to announce an Indo-Pak truce while the Line of Control was witnessing intermittent heavy shelling. India’s former Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibal has questioned the timing of the truce and the diplomatic blunder committed by the US. “The US is muddying the atmosphere of growing India- US ties by embarrassing India with public claims that it has mediated the ceasefire,” Sibal said in a long post on X.

The American leadership has disregarded the mood of Indian after the horrific killings in Pahalgam. “The US hasn’t taken into consideration sufficiently the national revulsion in India against the horrific jihadi attack in Pahalgam,” he added.

He also said that worst part of the entire scenario was the SU putting India and Pakistan on the same table. That Washington did not for once mentioned the menace of terrorism as the root cause of the present crisis makes it worse. “Worse, it has equated India and Pakistan. It has made no demands that Pakistan address the issue of terrorism which is not only India- related, it has been directed against the US,” the ex-envoy said.

The timing of the truce needs more probe, Sibal said adding that this essenatially means Islamabad getting away with backing terror groups. “Why give a pass to Pakistan on terrorism at this crucial moment by focusing on the military dimension and not its root cause,” Sibal asked. The New York Times and many other publications published reports on how the US brokered a peace deal between India and Pakistan at the height of Operation Sindoor. However, it should be noted that Indian armed forces have reiterated that the military operation is far from over.
