Speculation over the Mumbai mayor’s post has gathered pace days after the Mahayuti clinched a majority in the 227-member Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.

Although the BJP, with 89 seats, is the largest party, it requires the backing of the Shiv Sena (Shinde), which won 29 seats, to reach the majority mark of 114.

The uncertainty over the post has been further fuelled by deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde shifting his newly elected corporators to a hotel. According to a report by The Indian Express, the Shinde Sena has demanded a “clear and respectable share of power in the civic body,” seeking either the mayor’s post for half the five-year term or control of the powerful standing committee.

Mumbai mayor election

Mumbai’s mayor is chosen through an indirect election process by the newly elected members (corporators) of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Following the civic polls held on January 15, 2026, the mayoral election is expected around January 28, according to a report by CNN-News18.

Ahead of nominations, a lottery conducted by the Urban Development Department determines whether the post will be reserved for general, women, scheduled castes or OBCs. Following this, corporators belonging to the particular category can file their nominations.

Voting is done by a show of hands, and a simple majority of 114 votes is required to be elected. Notably, for the first time in 2026, 10 nominated corporators (Up from five in 2025) will also have voting rights.

The mayor holds office for a 2.5-year term as Mumbai’s ceremonial head and “First Citizen,” but executive powers are exercised by the Municipal Commissioner, an IAS officer.

The role of the mayor mainly involves presiding over meetings of the general body, maintaining order during debates, and using a casting vote in case of a tie.

Why is the lottery process used?

The lottery system is designed to keep the process neutral, preventing accusations of political manipulation in deciding reservations. Random rotation also ensures that different social groups get a fair chance to hold the mayor’s post, rather than the benefit accruing repeatedly to one category.

The last two mayors were reportedly from the open general category.
