With the BJP set to end its 27-year absence from power in Delhi, speculation is rife over who will helm the capital’s new government. The party is yet to confirm its choice, however, several names have already surfaced as leading contenders.
Who will be BJP’s pick to be Delhi CM: Check probable names
Parvesh Verma: The son of former Delhi chief minister Sahib Singh Verma, Parvesh Verma contested against Arvind Kejriwal in the high-profile New Delhi constituency. He has earned the status of a giant killer with his victory and emerged as a frontrunner for the CM’s position.
Ramesh Bidhuri: A former MP and prominent Gurjar leader, Ramesh Bidhuri contested against AAP’s Atishi Singh. Known for his outspoken nature, he remains a central figure in BJP’s Delhi politics.
Bansuri Swaraj: Daughter of late foreign affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, Bansuri Swaraj -- a first-time MP from New Delhi -- has quickly made a name for herself in the BJP. Contesting from a historic seat once held by Atal Bihari Vajpayee and LK Advani, she has been given a high-profile political launch. With her growing influence, she is emerging as a strong contender for the CM’s role.
Smriti Irani: Once a high-profile BJP leader, Smriti Irani has been noticeably absent from the political scene after her Lok Sabha defeat to Gandhi family loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma. However, as Delhi geared up for polls, reports suggested she was being considered for the CM post.
Dushyant Gautam: Dushyant Gautam, BJP’s national general secretary and Dalit leader, contested from Karol Bagh’s reserved constituency against AAP’s Vishesh Ravi. Having previously served as a Rajya Sabha MP, he has been active in student politics. His seniority in BJP and Dalit representation bolster his chances for the post.
According to the latest data by Election Commission (EC), the BJP has won 11 seats and is leading on 37 in the 70-member Assembly.
