The Assam chief minister’s special vigilance cell on Monday raided the Guwahati residence of Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Nupur Bora, recovering Rs 92 lakh in cash and jewellery valued at nearly Rs 2 crore, PTI reported. The officer was taken into custody after the seizure.

Officials said the raid was originally planned for Sunday night but was postponed as Bora was not at home. The operation began early Monday when she returned and was later extended to three other locations linked to her, including a rented house in Barpeta, where searches are still ongoing.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Bora had been under surveillance for six months after complaints surfaced about her alleged involvement in land-related irregularities. He alleged that during her posting as circle officer in Barpeta district, she facilitated illegal registration of government and Satra land in the names of suspected illegal settlers, referred to as “Miya.”

The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), led by Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, had earlier filed a complaint against her. The complaint alleged that she maintained a “rate card” for land services, charging bribes from Rs 1,500 for land maps to Rs 2 lakh for altering land records, News18 reported.

Rosy Kalita, superintendent of police of the vigilance cell, who led the raid, said multiple corruption allegations are being investigated. “The cash and ornaments seized were part of a preliminary operation. Further investigations may reveal more,” she said.

A separate raid is also underway against Surajit Deka, a land mandal in Barpeta, who is accused of corruption during his tenure.

Reacting to the developments, Sarma said, “My government is resolute in ensuring that corruption is brought to a halt and brings about transparency in government administration.”

Who is Nupur Bora?

Nupur Bora has served in government for just six years but is alleged to have amassed wealth far beyond her known sources of income. The vigilance cell said she owned multiple properties, with documents recovered during the raids.

Authorities confirmed that the seized cash, gold, and property papers form only part of the investigation, which may lead to more arrests and seizures in the coming days.
