India will need about 30,000 additional pilots over the coming years as domestic airlines induct the 1,700 aircraft they have ordered, Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said on Saturday, as per PTI.
Speaking at a session during the CII Partnership Summit, Naidu noted that India currently has around 8,000 pilots for a fleet of 834 aircraft, though 2,000–3,000 of them are not actively flying.
How the numbers add up
Explaining the requirement, the minister said that running one aircraft on a proper schedule typically needs 10 to 15 pilots, depending on routes and roster planning.
With Indian carriers set to add 1,700 planes from manufacturers such as Boeing and Airbus, the cumulative requirement rises to 25,000–30,000 pilots.
“This is the demand that will be created as these planes come in,” Naidu said.
Training capacity needs expansion
According to PTI, Naidu pointed out that India’s current Flying Training Organisations (FTOs) produce a limited number of pilots annually, and the ecosystem will need to grow to keep pace.
He also noted that each aviation job supports around 15 indirect jobs in related services, a higher multiplier than the six estimated by IATA.
Cargo infrastructure and dedicated hubs under consideration
The minister observed that India’s air cargo sector faces cost competition from rail and road transport. Passenger facilities have seen stronger improvements in recent years, while cargo infrastructure has developed more gradually.
To address this, the government is exploring dedicated cargo airports, taking cues from global models such as FedEx’s primary hub in the United States.
India’s aerospace ambitions
India currently manufactures around USD 2 billion worth of aerospace components. The target is to reach USD 4 billion by 2030, which Naidu said is achievable based on current progress.
He added that developing a fully designed and manufactured aircraft in India remains a long-term goal and that the overall capability in design, manufacturing, and maintenance has improved steadily.
Air travel continues to grow
Daily air passenger numbers remain strong, averaging 4.8 lakh travellers a day. On November 10, Indian airports handled 5.3 lakh passengers, one of the highest single-day totals recorded.
