The Congress, on Wednesday, criticised the government following US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims that India is “not going to buy much oil from Russia,". He pointed out that this marks the fourth instance in six days that Trump publicly addressed India’s energy policy.
The opposition also took aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying what he conceals, “Trump reveals.”
The remarks came after Trump called PM Modi to extend Diwali greetings.
Congress general secretary for communications Jairam Ramesh slammed the Prime Minister on X, saying, “The PM has finally acknowledged publicly that President Trump called him up and that the two spoke to each other. But all that the PM has said is that the US President extended Diwali greetings. But while Mr. Modi conceals, Mr. Trump reveals.”

Ramesh added that Trump had stated that he discussed India’s Russian oil imports with PM Modi and had been assured that they would be stopped. “This is the 4th time in six days that the US President has announced India’s policy,” he noted.
Ramesh also referenced Trump’s earlier announcement on May 10 about Operation Sindoor, which preceded any statement from PM Modi.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi thanked Trump for his Diwali greetings, calling for continued cooperation between the two democracies, even as the US President repeatedly claimed that India would cut back on Russian oil imports.
The exchange came after Trump spoke to PM Modi on the phone, extending Diwali wishes. The conversation takes place amid strains in US-India relations over trade tariffs and other disputes.
During remarks at the White House, Trump told reporters that he had spoken to PM Modi and said India was “not going to buy much oil from Russia.”
Trump has repeatedly claimed that PM Modi assured him India would curb Russian oil imports. despite New Delhi dismissing any such discussion. According to the MEA, the last verified call between the leaders took place on October 9, when PM Modi congratulated Trump on the success of the Gaza peace plan.
India continues to be a major importer of discounted Russian crude, even under Western sanctions imposed since 2022. New Delhi maintains that these imports are essential for domestic energy security and to stabilise fuel prices, despite repeated calls from the US and Europe to reduce purchases.
