Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, on Tuesday, reacted to the controversy after Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury brought a dog into Parliament on Monday, calling the incident “the main topic” of discussion in the country.

Interacting with reporters outside the Parliament, Gandhi said, “I guess these are the things that India is discussing these days…”

He added, “Dog is the main topic today, I believe. What did the poor dog do? Are dogs not allowed here? It is allowed inside. Maybe pets are not allowed here. I guess these are the things that India is discussing these days.”

Chowdhury, on Monday, sparked controversy by bringing a rescued stray dog to Parliament. Her action still drew criticism from BJP leaders who accused her of theatrics.

Defending her actions, Chowdhury had told reporters, “This government does not like animals. Animals don't have a voice. It (dog) was in the car, so what is their problem? It is so small, does it look like it will bite? Those sitting inside Parliament bite, not dogs.” She added, “Which law says that I can't rescue a dog?”

Chowdhury, a self-confessed dog lover with several pets, reportedly had her driver take the dog to a veterinarian after dropping her at Parliament.
