The mother of RG Kar victim is reportedly eyeing a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly polls. On Thursday, she said that she wants to contest the upcoming polls as a BJP candidate, emphasising that she aims to take the political route to remove the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in the state.

The mother of the deceased doctor said she may contest from the Panihati constituency in North 24 Parganas. She added that she had previously received an offer from the BJP but was not mentally prepared to take it up at the time.

"I had received an offer from the BJP long back, but I was not mentally ready then. Yesterday, I decided to accept it and contest because I want to end the rule of the home minister," she said, referring to chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who also holds the home portfolio.

She alleged that the state government had attempted to obstruct the investigation and judicial process in her daughter’s case.

"I am entering politics to ensure justice for my daughter and to remove this government from power," she said.

Recently, BJP leader Arjun Singh met with the parents of the deceased doctor.

The family further accused the Communist Party of India (Marxist) of tacitly supporting the Trinamool Congress government to maintain power.

The August 2024 rape and murder of the 31-year-old doctor inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital sparked nationwide outrage and led to prolonged protests by doctors and civil society groups across the state.

The case became a major political flashpoint in the state, with the BJP accusing the Mamata Banerjee government of shielding those responsible, while the TMC rejected the allegations and said the law would take its course.

West Bengal is set to vote in two phases next month, with counting of votes to take place on May 4.
