China on Tuesday said the 6.8-magnitude earthquake near one of Tibet's holiest cities, which claimed at least 126 lives, caused no damage to any dams or reservoirs in the country. The statement by the Ministry of Water Resources came as the earthquake highlighted concerns raised by experts about China's plan to build the world's largest dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet near the Indian border. Following the earthquake, China’s Ministry of Water Resources stated that inspections found no impact on dams or reservoirs in the region, according to the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post.

India on Tuesday expressed condolences on the deaths and destruction caused by a devastating earthquake in the Tibet Autonomous Region. "Government and people of India express condolences on the tragic loss of life and property caused by the devastating earthquake in the Tibet Autonomous Region," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on X. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families," he said.

Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, on Tuesday expressed profound sadness over the loss of lives in a devastating earthquake in Dingri County of Tibet. A 6.8-magnitude earthquake jolted Dingri County in Xigaze in Tibet Autonomous Region in China, killing at least 95 people and injuring 130 others with tremors also shaking buildings and forcing people to run to the streets in neighbouring Nepal.

A minor girl was killed in an IED blast allegedly carried out by Maoists at Jaraikela area in West Singhbhum district, a senior police officer said on Tuesday. The incident occurred when the seven-year-old girl went to the forests in Tirilposi and Thalkobad villages to collect firewood, and accidentally stepped on the improvised explosive device (IED) “planted by CPI (Maoist)”, he said.

BSP supremo Mayawati on Tuesday expressed hope that the Election Commission would ensure the Delhi Assembly polls were not tainted by the "misuse of government machinery, communalism, and other vile propaganda". Polling for the 70-member Delhi Assembly will be held on February 5 and the votes counted on February 8, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kumar announced on Tuesday.

Welcoming the announcement in a post on X, Mayawati said, "BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party) is contesting this election independently and with full preparation and vigour. I hope the party will definitely perform better in this election."

Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Tuesday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government "evicted" her from her official residence after cancelling it allotment for the second time in three months.

"The schedule for Delhi elections was announced today. Last night, the BJP-led central government, for the second time in three months, threw me out of my official residence, which has been allotted to me as CM. A South Korean court has re-issued a warrant to arrest impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, the country's corruption investigation agency said on Tuesday. Investigators seeking to question him on allegations of insurrection have struggled to execute a warrant for his arrest. The head of the investigation unit, blocked by a human chain of hundreds of presidential security service and military guards outside his residence last week, said earlier on Tuesday they remained determined to bring him in.

The first international commercial flight since the fall of former Syrian President Bashar Assad landed Tuesday at the Damascus airport, arriving from Qatar. Jordanian state-run Petra news agency also reported that a Royal Jordanian Airlines plane departed heading to Damascus on a test flight.

The head of the Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission, Capt. Haitham Misto, who was on board the flight with a team of specialists, said that the aim was to evaluate the technical condition of the Damascus airport before resuming regular flights.

The Enforcement Directorate has issued fresh summons to BRS leader K T Rama Rao for questioning in a money laundering case on January 16 after he did not depose on Tuesday, reports PTI. The probe by the federal agency is linked to alleged payment irregularities during the Formula-E race held in Hyderabad in February 2023. Sources said 48-year-old Rama Rao, popularly known as KTR, was asked to depose on January 7. However, he sought two weeks to depose and hence, he was given a fresh date to appear on January 16.

A day after eight police personnel and a civilian driver were killed in a blast in Bijapur, security forces on Tuesday recovered a 10 kg improvised explosive device (IED) planted by Maoists in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district, police said. A team of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and district police found the explosive device near Belpochcha village on the Konta-Golapalli road, a PTI  report quoting an official said. He said during a de-mining exercise on the route, security personnel spotted the IED planted beneath the road and averted a major mishap.

China has temporarily closed the scenic areas of its side of Mount Everest, also known as Mount Qomolangma, following a 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Dingri County in the Tibet Autonomous Region on Tuesday.

At least six flights were delayed at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport early his morning due to poor visibility caused by dense fog.
