US President Donald Trump stated on Friday (local time) that his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin was "productive" and aimed at reducing the human toll of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Anchorage, Alaska, Trump claimed that if both sides took action, thousands of lives could be saved each week. He emphasised that Putin shares this goal: "We're going to stop 5,000, 6,000, or 7,000 people a week from being killed, and President Putin wants to see that as much as I do," he said.
Trump mentioned that several points were agreed upon during the discussion, but noted that a few key issues remain unresolved. "I believe we had a very productive meeting. There were many points we agreed on, though a couple of significant ones still need work. There's no deal until we have a deal. I will be contacting NATO and other appropriate parties, including President [Volodymyr] Zelenskyy, to inform them about today's meeting. Ultimately, it's up to them," he explained.
He praised the efforts of officials from both sides, including US and Russian representatives, for their contributions to progress. "They’ll have to agree with great people from the Trump administration, including Marco, Steve, Scott, and John. Our leaders have done an exceptional job, and many tremendous Russian business representatives are here. I think everyone is eager to engage with us. We've quickly become the most sought-after country in the world, and we look forward to resolving this situation. We made significant progress today," he added.
Additionally, Trump highlighted his longstanding rapport with Putin, stating, "I've always had a fantastic relationship with President Putin. We’ve had many tough meetings."
He remarked on how the 'Russia hoax' had complicated US-Russia relations, noting that both leaders recognized it as a hindrance. "We were interfered with by the Russia, Russia, Russia hoax, which he understood. I believe he has seen a lot in his career. He knew it was a hoax, and I knew it too, but what happened was very criminal. It made it harder for our countries to deal with business. We will have a good chance once this is over," Trump said.
Trump expressed optimism about reaching a meaningful agreement. "Some points are not that significant. One is probably the most significant, but we have a very good chance of getting there. We didn't finalize a deal today, but I am hopeful. I would like to thank President Putin and his entire team. We've had good, productive meetings over the years and hope to continue that in the future. Let's aim for the most productive meeting right now," he said.
