A 50-year-old village chief in Manipur’s Churachandpur was allegedly beaten to death by unknown miscreants suspected to be cadres of the banned underground outfit, United Kuki National Army (UKNA), on Monday.

The victim, identified as M Haokip, was the village chief of T Khonomphai village in Henglep sub-division of the Churachandpur district. After the attack, locals rushed him to Churachandpur town's main hospital, but he died on the way, officials said, according to a report by NDTV.

The village chief's body has several bruises and lacerations. Locals alleged the attackers thrashed him with sticks and blunt objects.

Haokip's family or the police have not said what could have led to the attack by the UKNA. A first information report (FIR) has been filed, the police said, NDTV reported.

The Henglep Headquarter Area Chief Association (HACA) condemned the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday.
