Vice President CP Radhakrishnan on Friday formally assumed charge as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, a day after being sworn in as the 15th Vice President of India, replacing Jagdeep Dhankhar.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan earlier in the day. Soon after, the Vice President paid floral tributes at the memorials of Mahatma Gandhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, and Chaudhary Charan Singh.
Radhakrishnan later visited the Parliament House Complex, where he was welcomed by Union Ministers, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Harivansh, and Rajya Sabha Secretary-General PC Mody. He offered tributes to statues of national leaders at Prerna Sthal and planted a sapling to mark his first day in office.
Entering Parliament through Shardul Dwar, the Vice President formally took charge as Chairman of the Upper House. Leaders of various political parties called on him during the occasion.
Among those present were Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju, Deputy Chairman Harivansh, MoS for Parliamentary Affairs and Law & Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, MoS for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs L Murugan, and Rajya Sabha Secretary-General PC Mody.
