A devastating cloudburst in Uttarkashi district has triggered massive flash floods and landslides, causing widespread destruction in Dharali and Sukhi Top areas.

Rescue operations are in full swing, with teams from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Indian Army working tirelessly to evacuate stranded individuals and locate the missing.

Kamlesh Kamal, ITBP Spokesperson, provided an update on the ongoing efforts, stating, "Five teams of ITBP consisting of 130 jawans are there in Dharali. More than 100 jawans are en route, and they will reach there soon... We have recovered a body this morning, and more than 100 people have been rescued. Today, we have also set up communication... Now that the equipment has been provided, it is possible that we will see that this rescue operation will gain momentum..."

"The entire Dharali has been completely hit by the disaster, and after yesterday's incident, debris has come there in several phases. I went there today and met the people, talked to them and took information about the incident. Everything was destroyed by the disaster. Along with this, until evening, the army personnel have rescued about 190 people. They have been taken to safe places. Right now the injured are also being rescued from there and brought to Uttarkashi. The entire connecting road has been completely affected by landslides at many places... The government is fully committed to make all the arrangements. The Prime Minister has also assured us to provide all possible help, and under his guidance, we will help the disaster victims properly," said Dhami.

Rescue teams continue search operations in Uttarkashi’s Dharali after a devastating cloudburst left over 100 people missing and four confirmed dead. DIG NDRF Mohsen Shahedi said around 150 people have been evacuated to safety so far.

CM Pushkar Singh Dhami conducted an aerial survey of flood-affected Dharali in Uttarkashi following Tuesday's cloudburst.

In the wake of the devastating mudslide at Kheer Gad, Dharali, Col Harshvardhan, Commanding Officer of 14 RAJRIF, is leading 150 personnel in critical rescue and relief operations, says Defence PRO told ANI.

"Despite being cut off and the unit's base being adversely affected, and 11 personnel feared missing, the team continues to operate with unwavering determination. 20 people have been rescued so far. In the meantime, additional columns are being moved to be pressed into rescue operations," Defence PRO.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath spoke to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami over the phone. CM Yogi expressed condolences to the victim families. CM assured CM Dhami of all possible help, said UP CMO.

A boulder fell on the railway track between the Haridwar-Motichur section on the Haridwar-Dehradun route. Northern Railways told ANI since the Railways had already made a canopy, no major damage took place.

"No injury or casualty reported. Restoration work started, and sectional officers have reached the site. Traffic will be restored as early as possible, it said.

Railway SP Aruna Bharti said that around 6.30-6.45 pm, debris and small boulders fell (on the track)..Some wires broke."

"Janta Express is halted at Harrawala, and police are at the spot. The scheduled trains are asked not to commence the journey. It may take 4-5 hours more to clear the track... Four to five trains are affected... Different wings of the railway department are here for rescue operations... RPF and police are here..." Bharti told ANI.

Uttarakhand government told ANI that teams of the Army, ITBP, NDRF and SDRF have rescued 130 people.

In view of the weather department's rain warning in Uttarakhand, a holiday has been declared for all schools from class 1 to 12 and Anganwadi centres in the state's Champawat, Pauri, Udham Singh Nagar, Almora, Pithoragarh, Chamoli, and Rudraprayag districts, said Uttarakhand DIPR.

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami says, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured us that the central government will help us in every way. Home Minister has also assured us, I thank him too."

"Our effort is to ensure that all types of services are available there. The electricity department and our Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam are working together there. Restoring electricity is also our priority. It will be done by tonight," he said.

"Along with this, the towers have also been affected by this. Due to which connectivity, phone, internet facilities etc have been disrupted there, we are also doing that immediately. Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami said due to the disaster in Dharali, a lot of debris has come and rescue work is going on there at a fast pace and Army, ITBP and SDRF teams are there.

He further said about 70-80 people have been evacuated to safe place.

"Apart from this, all the departments are in coordination with the army. Some roads have also been blocked. DM and SP are reaching the spot. The weather is a big challenge. It is raining there at this time also," Dhami told ANI.

"Apart from this, all types of reviews have been done here. The health department is deploying doctors at its level. It is making immediate arrangements for medicines, food etc and to ensure that the ration reaches there, the police department has appointed about 160 police personnel, 10 senior officers and three SP rank officers there. Three nodal officers have also been appointed from here," he further said.

MoS Road Transport & Highways and BJP MP from Almora-Pithoragarh, Ajay Tamta says said that the debris from the cloudburst damaged houses as it moved forward.

He said the people who saw it made noise and alerted the people, because of which many people could keep themselves safe.

"But some people also got caught in this disaster... NDRF, ITBP and army teams are at the spot. District administration is also carrying out the rescue operations... Doctors are also there... It cannot be said yet how many people are missing or have lost their lives...", he said.

"The work to rescue those stranded on rooftops is going on rapidly... The biggest challenge is that the rain has not stopped, causing difficulty in the rescue operations...", he added. -- ANI

The Kedarnath flash flood occurred in June 2013, specifically on the night of June 16–17, 2013. It was triggered by cloudbursts and heavy rainfall, which caused devastating floods and landslides in the Kedarnath Valley and other parts of Uttarakhand, resulting in one of the worst natural disasters in India in recent history. Thousands of people lost their lives, and the region suffered extensive damage to infrastructure, homes, and pilgrimage routes.

Commissioner of Garhwal Mandal, Vinay Shankar Pandey, confirmed that following the Harsil incident in Uttarkashi, reports have emerged of a cloudburst near Sukhi Top on the same route. While there have been no reports of casualties or property damage from the area, he noted that extremely heavy rainfall has led to a significant rise in water levels. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with evacuation efforts underway. “Our Army, NDRF, and SDRF teams are actively involved in rescue operations, and with the help of local residents, people are being safely evacuated,” Pandey said.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the region, reporting "extremely heavy" rainfall of approximately 21 centimetres (eight inches) in some isolated areas of Uttarakhand.

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami said the news of heavy damage caused by a cloudburst in the Dharali (Uttarkashi) region is extremely sad and distressing.

“SDRF, NDRF, district administration, and other related teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations on a war footing. In this regard, I am in constant contact with senior officials, and the situation is being closely monitored. I pray to God for everyone’s safety,” he wrote on X.
