After days of desperate appeals, United States Embassy has granted an urgent visa to the family of Indian student Nilam Shinde, lying in a coma after a road accident in California, on Friday morning.

This comes after the Ministry of External Affairs, upon appeal by the family for an early visa, took up the matter with the US on Thursday. Then, the woman's family had got a call from the US Embassy in Mumbai to appear for a visa interview.

The family, including Nilam's father, cousin brother, and uncle, will now be flying to the US, according to a report by the NDTV.

Nilam Shinde, 35, is in a critical state after she was hit by a four-wheeler in California on February 14. Her family in Maharashtra's Satara had been trying to get a visa since then.

On Thursday, the Indian consulate in San Francisco posted an update on X on the Nilam Shinde case, extending its support to her family.

In the statement, the consulate expressed its "sympathy and solidarity" with Shinde's family and assured that it has been in constant touch with the hospital, her family and friends.
