United Nations General Secretary António Guterres has urged India and Pakistan to exercise "maximum restraint" as tensions between the two countries have reached their "boiling point" after the recent attack on civilians in Kashmir's Pahalgam, where 26 people were killed after confirming their religious identity.
"It is also essential – especially at this critical hour -- to avoid a military confrontation that could easily spin out of control," Guterres said.
"Tensions between India and Pakistan are at the highest in years. I deeply respect and I am profoundly grateful to the government and people of both countries and their significant contribution to United Nations Peacekeeping, and so it pains me to see the relationship reach a boiling point," he said.
"I once again strongly condemn that (Pahalgam) attack and extend condolences to the families of the victims. Targeting civilians is unacceptable and those responsible must be brought to justice through credible lawful means," the UN Chief added.
Further, the UN Chief said, "The United Nations stands ready to support any initiative that promotes de-escalation, diplomacy, and a renewed commitment to peace." "And I offer my good offices to both governments in the service of peace."
Notably, the Home Ministry of India has asked several states to undertake a range of steps for effective civil defence on May 7, news agency ANI said on Monday. The drills are seen as an exercise to gauge the nation's defence preparedness.
This came in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives on April 22. India has since then initiated several retaliatory measures, including the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty and closing airspace for Pakistani nationals. India has also banned Pakistani nationals from India, directing them to return to Pakistan within a stipulated time frame.
