One dead, 18 injured in massive pile-up on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

A woman was killed and 18 others injured after a speeding container trailer truck collided with multiple vehicles on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Saturday afternoon.

The incident occurred near the Adoshi tunnel under the Khopoli police station limits in Khalapur taluka of Raigad district, newy agency PTI reported citing a police official.

“The driver of the container trailer reportedly lost control due to a brake failure, ramming into at least 20 vehicles, including luxury cars such as BMWs and Mercedes-Benz,” the official said.

The truck driver was taken into custody by Khopoli police. A medical test confirmed that he was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. A case has been registered, and an investigation is ongoing.

The collision triggered a massive pile-up near Datta Food Mall, just after the descent from the Lonavala-Khandala ghat section. Local reports suggest that the truck, travelling at high speed, suffered brake failure and crashed into a vehicle, setting off a chain reaction involving 18 to 20 vehicles.

The crash caused traffic to back up for nearly five kilometres.

The impact of the collision was severe. At least three vehicles were completely crushed, with several others badly damaged. Emergency teams were promptly deployed to rescue the injured and clear the wreckage.
