Trinamool Congress leader and MP Mahua Moitra slammed her party colleagues for making ‘disgusting’ remarks over the alleged rape incident at the South Calcutta Law College on June 25.

“Misogyny in India cuts across party lines. What differentiates @AITCofficial is that we condemn these disgusting comments no matter who makes them,” Moitra said in a post on X on June 28.

The MP’s comment comes after TMC’s four-time MP Kalyan Banerjee, who is also a senior advocate at the Calcutta High Court, said government agencies can’t provide protection in a case where “a friend rapes another friend”.

Another colleague and state legislator Madan Mitra stirred a controversy when he remarked that the incident signals that girls should not go to college when it is closed.

Both the remarks drew sharp reactions from leaders across the political spectrum.

Mamata Banerjee-led TMC official condemned the remarks and said the remarks regarding the alleged rape incident were made in their personal capacity. “The party unequivocally disassociates itself from their statements and strongly condemns the same. These views do not reflect the position of the party in any manner whatsoever,” TMC said in a post on X.

The party added that its stance remains resolute and has “zero tolerance” for crimes against women and demand the strictest possible punishment for all those involved in the crime.
