Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a sharp attack on West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), saying no matter how hard the “tyrannical government” tries, it will not be able to stop the “storm of change” in the state.

Addressing a massive rally in Kolkata at the culmination of the BJP’s Parivartan Yatra campaign ahead of the assembly elections, Modi said the countdown had begun for those who brought a “reign of maha jungleraj” to Bengal.

“No matter how hard this tyrannical government tries, it will not be able to stop the storm of change,” the prime minister said, taking aim at the government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

He alleged that the Trinamool Congress neither works for the people nor allows others to work, claiming that several central welfare schemes were being stalled in the state.

“TMC neither works nor allows others to work. Many central schemes are being stalled in Bengal,” Modi said, accusing the ruling party of blocking development initiatives.

The prime minister also spoke about the challenges faced by young people in the state, saying Bengal’s youth were suffering under the “curse of exodus”.

“Youths of Bengal are suffering under the curse of exodus. They are neither getting degrees nor jobs,” he said.

Modi further said that once the political change takes place in the state, the rule of law would be restored and those accused of atrocities would not be spared.

“Bengal will again have rule of law. TMC leaders accused of atrocities will not be spared,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the prime minister inaugurated and laid foundation stones for multiple development projects spanning road, railway, port and shipping sectors.

In a major push to road connectivity, he launched national highway projects with a combined length of more than 420 km worth around Rs 16,990 crore. These include sections of NH-19 in West Bengal and Jharkhand and NH-114 in West Bengal, aimed at improving road safety, reducing travel time and boosting regional connectivity.

Modi also laid the foundation stone for new highway projects, including five packages of the 231-km four-lane Kharagpur-Moregram economic corridor on NH-116A.

In the railway sector, the prime minister inaugurated six redeveloped railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, aimed at upgrading passenger amenities and modernising infrastructure.

His visit to the state comes weeks before the expected announcement of the West Bengal Assembly election schedule by the Election Commission of India.
