Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has alerted people living on the riverside and low-lying areas as rainfall continues to wreak havoc in several parts of the Northeast. Notably, at least 30 people have lost their lives in rain-induced incidents in the Northeast.
"Heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh — Kibitoo (17 cm), Hayuliang (15 cm), Kalaktang (10 cm) — may lead to a sharp rise in river levels downstream. Assam already witnessing intense rain in Silchar (42 cm), Karimganj (35 cm), Hailakandi (30 cm) and in nearby areas. People in low-lying and riverbank areas are advised to stay alert and follow local advisories. Stay safe, stay prepared," Sarma wrote in an X post.
IMD has issued a red alert for West Tripura and Khowai, along with a warning of possible traffic disruptions, flash floods, landslides, crop damage and power outages across the state.
Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the Chief Ministers of Assam, Manipur, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, assuring them of every possible help at such a time. In Tripura, at least 1300 families have been shifted to relief camps as floods continue to cause trouble in the state.
Not only the locals, the rains and floods have posed significant danger and trouble for the tourists as 1500 of them have been reported to be stranded in several parts of Sikkim, as of Saturday.
The severe weather conditions have disrupted train services in the region. Reports said that a spokesperson for the Northeast Frontier Railway said that due to the constant heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours and water overflowing onto the tracks in the Baraigram–Dullabcherra section, the Dullabcherra–Silchar passenger train was cancelled for Sunday.
