Five people, including an 8-year-old girl, were seriously injured after a speeding Audi car rammed into them while they were asleep on a footpath in Delhi’s Vasant Vihar in the wee hours of Wednesday.
The incident took place around 1:45 am on July 9, police officials confirmed late Saturday evening.
The victims, who include two couples and an eight-year-old girl, were rushed to nearby hospitals before the police arrived. They have been identified as Ladhi (40), her daughter Bimla (8), husband Sabami alias Chirma (45), and another couple, Ram Chander (45) and Narayani (35).
All five are said to be residents of Rajasthan.
The accused, Utsav Shekhar (40), a resident of Dwarka, was reportedly intoxicated at the time of the crash. His medical examination confirmed the presence of alcohol in his system.
He was apprehended at the scene, said the official.
According to preliminary investigations and eyewitness accounts, the speeding Audi veered onto the pavement and ran over the sleeping victims outside Shiva Camp.
Shekhar has since been arrested, and legal proceedings have been initiated.
