The Consulate General of India in Seattle hosted a vibrant showcase of India’s famed mangoes, introducing five handpicked varieties to key American stakeholders in a bid to expand exports and capture new market share in the US.
The event, held in partnership with APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority), featured a curated mango tasting experience aimed at boosting the presence of Indian mangoes in the Pacific Northwest.
The spotlight was on five distinctive mango varieties, Dussehri, Chausa, Langra, Mallika, and Totapuri, each known for its unique aroma, texture, and sweetness. The session targeted leading importers and select media from Seattle, blending culinary diplomacy with a larger trade promotion strategy.
“This isn’t just about fruit tasting, it’s about telling the story of Indian agriculture, tradition, and quality,” said one industry expert during the event.
The event saw prominent attendance, with Washington State Attorney General Nick Brown serving as the Guest of Honour. Other dignitaries included State Senator Manka Dhingra and Seattle Port Commissioner Sam Cho, who all praised the superior quality of Indian mangoes and the potential for greater trade collaboration.
According to trade data highlighted during the event, India’s mango exports to the United States jumped by 19 percent in 2024, suggesting America’s growing appetite for the 'King of Fruits.' Speakers emphasised that beyond nostalgia for Indian Americans, these mangoes appeal to mainstream US consumers looking for premium, authentic produce.
In a parallel initiative, the Consulate also held an Indian Food Festival and Mango Promotion event in Redmond on July 9, featuring another mango tasting session. This event was attended by Washington State Representative Alex Ybarra and members of the Indian-American community, along with US retail industry representatives.
Notably, B2B meetings were held on the sidelines between Indian exporters and American retailers to explore future collaboration and ensure wider availability of Indian mangoes across regional supermarket chains.
