The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the apology tendered by Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah over his controversial remarks directed at Indian Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. The court also ordered an SIT probe on the matter.
The apex court's decision comes days after it sharply rebuked Vijay Shah over his controversial remark. "You are a public figure. A seasoned politician. You should weigh your words when you speak. We should display your video here… This is an important issue for the armed Forces. We need to be very responsible," observed the SC.
"A Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising three senior IPS officers, who do not belong to the State of Madhya Pradesh, must investigate the FIR against BJP Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah," ordered the apex court. Additionally, the Court directed the Madhya Pradesh DGP to constitute the SIT by 10 am tomorrow. It should be headed by an IGP and both members shall be also of rank SP or above.
The controversy stems from a public address delivered by Shah, Tribal Welfare Minister of Madhya Pradesh, on May 12 in Raikunda village in Indore.
Speaking at a local event, Shah made comments that were widely perceived as communal, gendered, and derogatory toward Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a senior Indian Army officer who has become a mainstay in national press briefings on Operation Sindoor, often appearing alongside Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh.
