Row erupts in Mizoram amid plan to hand over airport to IAF: 'Shameful'

A political storm has erupted in Mizoram over the state government’s proposal to hand over Lengpui Airport to the Indian Air Force (IAF), The Times of India has reported.

The opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) has strongly opposed the move, vowing to prevent the transfer at all costs.

On Saturday, a team of MNF legislators, led by Leader of Opposition Lalchhandama Ralte, visited the airport and reiterated their opposition to the move.

Speaking to reporters, Ralte criticized the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM)-led government for initiating the proposal soon after assuming office in December 2023.

“When ZPM assumed power, one of Chief Minister Lalduhoma’s first initiatives was to propose handing over our airport to the IAF, which is shameful,” Ralte was quoted as saying by TOI.

He addedthat previous Congress and MNF governments had worked hard to establish and maintain the airport despite financial difficulties. “Former Chief Ministers Lal Thanhawla (Congress) and Zoramthanga (MNF) managed to retain ownership of the airport despite financial challenges. This proves the ZPM government’s total financial failure,” he said.

Ralte warned of significant consequences if the airport were handed over to the IAF. He pointed out that 27 IAF-controlled airports across India prioritize military operations, citing examples such as Pune, Tezpur, Bagdogra, and Srinagar. Given Mizoram’s strategic location near China, he said, Lengpui could be converted into a jet fighter base.

“Frequent fighter jet sorties and airspace restrictions could reduce flight frequency, affecting Mizoram’s economic progress,” Ralte said.

He also expressed concerns over noise pollution from military aircraft, saying that it will disrupt Aizawl and nearby areas. He added that Lengpui and its surroundings could become high-priority targets during conflicts.

The MNF leader highlighted a previous proposal by his party to expand Lengpui Airport. “The previous MNF government had already proposed constructing a second runway and submitted its detailed project report to the Centre,” he said. “With India’s Act East Policy in focus, our dream is to upgrade Lengpui into an international airport. That will never happen if the IAF takes control.”

Several civil society groups also opposed the plan.

The NGO Coordination Committee (NGOCC), a coalition of major civil societies and student organizations, met with CM Lalduhoma on Friday to express their opposition. In a statement, NGOCC leaders said they had urged the Chief Minister to explore alternatives to maintain the airport instead of handing it over to the IAF.
