Report says 74% Indians ‘satisfied’ with democracy, BJP says Rahul Gandhi's attempts to malign India's image dismissed

A report by the Pew Research Centre, which was released this week, said that as many as 74% of Indians are satisfied with how their democracy functions. The report has put India among the highest globally in democratic approval.

According to the report, Japan reported the lowest satisfaction levels, with only 24 per cent of its population approving of their democratic system.

Amit Malviya, the in-charge of BJP's National Information & Technology Department, took to his X page to target Congress and Rahul Gandhi using the report. "Bad news for the self-appointed custodians of Indian democracy. A global Pew Research survey shows that 74% of Indians are satisfied with democracy, placing India just behind Sweden at 75%," Malviya wrote.

"Despite constant efforts to defame India on foreign platforms, the reality stands tall. Rahul Gandhi’s repeated attempts to portray India in a poor light have been dismissed yet again, by the people, and now by global data," he added in his X post.

The report also dives into the major causes of dissatisfaction, especially in the nations where high income is the norm. India has shown satisfactory levels in both democracy and economy but countries like France, Greece, Italy, Japan, and South Korea showed discontent in both areas.

Across the 23 countries surveyed, a median of 58% of adults reported being dissatisfied with their democracies, reflecting a broad global sense of discontent. This marks a noticeable rise in dissatisfaction compared to the 49% who expressed satisfaction back in 2017. The downward trend in democratic satisfaction has steadily continued since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
