Tourists visiting Mussoorie must register at check-in: Uttarakhand's new rule to curb overcrowding

The move follows earlier directions issued by the National Green Tribunal in May, urging the state government to monitor tourist flow and report data from the region regularly

District Tourism Officer Brijendra Pandey said that the new rule came into force on Wednesday.

Tourists planning to visit Mussoorie will now be required to register their details on a dedicated portal developed by the Uttarakhand Tourism Department at the time of check-in, according to an announcement made by officials on Thursday as reported by news agency PTI.

District Tourism Officer Brijendra Pandey stated that the regulation came into effect on Wednesday. Hotels, guest houses, homestays, and other accommodations must first register on the portal themselves and then enter the details of all incoming guests during check-in.

The decision aims to address the growing challenges of overcrowding and traffic congestion in the popular hill station, which has seen a sharp rise in tourist numbers between 2022 and 2024. "This initiative will help provide real-time data on tourist footfall," Pandey noted.

Facility owners have been instructed to comply with the directive. The move follows earlier directions issued by the National Green Tribunal in May, urging the state government to monitor tourist flow and report data from the region regularly.
