India is set to embark on a pioneering venture with the launch of its first human-operated underwater submersible as part of the Deep Ocean Mission. According to a report by PTI, Earth Sciences Minister Jitendra Singh announced on Thursday that the submersible, capable of diving up to 500 meters into the sea, will begin operations this year. The mission aims to explore the vast, largely uncharted depths of the ocean and unlock crucial resources for the nation's economic and environmental future.

Singh said that this ambitious project aligns with India’s broader scientific goals, including the Gaganyaan space mission, underscoring the country’s growing achievements in cutting-edge technologies., PTI reported.

The Deep Ocean Mission holds the potential to discover rare minerals, metals, and marine biodiversity that could drive India's blue economy, vital for long-term economic growth and sustainability.

Beyond resource exploration, the mission is poised to contribute to understanding deep-sea ecosystems, fostering sustainable fisheries, and enhancing biodiversity conservation. The minister believes that by tapping into the underwater treasures, India can secure long-term benefits for its economy, scientific community, and environmental resilience, cementing its position as a leader in marine science and technology.
