A sudden spell of strong winds and dust storms swept across Delhi-NCR on Saturday, causing damage to infrastructure, including the newly inaugurated Ashok Nagar station of the Rapid Rail Metro in the capital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the 13-kilometre Delhi stretch of the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail Transit System, connecting Sahibabad and New Ashok Nagar, on January 5, 2025.

The severe weather also led to a fatal incident in central Delhi’s Paharganj area, where a building under construction collapsed amid heavy rainfall, claiming three lives.

According to officials, the incident took place near Krishna Hotel on Ara Kansa Road, where the side wall of an under-construction basement gave way. Four fire tenders were dispatched to the location for rescue efforts.

They also added that three people were initially trapped and rescued, but all three were later declared dead.

Delhi Police confirmed the identities of the deceased as Prabhu (65), a contractor, and two of his workers — Niranjan (40), both residents of Munger in Bihar, and Roshan (35), from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh. Another worker, Chuttan (35), also from Munger, sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment.

The incident happened on a day when intense winds and dust storms swept across Delhi and neighbouring cities like Noida and Ghaziabad, continuing a pattern of similar weather from the day before.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms and rainfall in parts of Delhi within the next two hours. Delhi residents woke up to a cloudy Saturday morning, with the temperature dipping to 24.3 degree Celsius — 2.2 degree Celsius lower than the seasonal average. The maximum temperature is likely to reach around 42 degree Celsius,
