The BJP on Saturday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of misusing his constitutional position as Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha to defend his brother-in-law Robert Vadra, calling it an attempt to “protect family crimes.”
BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi launched a scathing attack on Gandhi, alleging he was using his official platform to shield Vadra, who has been charge-sheeted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case related to a Haryana land deal.
"This is clearly a family matter, not a political one," said Trivedi, questioning whether Gandhi's remarks defending Vadra were made in a personal capacity or as LoP. “He has misused his constitutional position to protect his family’s crimes,” he added.
Trivedi also took aim at the opposition INDIA bloc, suggesting that it is disintegrating ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. He cited the Aam Aadmi Party’s exit and the CPI(M)’s jibe at Gandhi over his criticism of the Kerala government as signs of internal turmoil.
Invoking a popular Hindi song, Trivedi quipped about the alliance’s bleak prospects, saying if its present is this chaotic, its future appears even darker.
Rahul Gandhi had earlier denounced the ED action as a "witch-hunt" against Vadra and expressed confidence that “truth shall prevail.” He said his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and her family would withstand the "persecution."
Trivedi hit back, alleging the Congress “first family” is “neck-deep in corruption” and only interested in power and wealth, even at the cost of dividing society.
He also accused the Gandhis of defending corrupt individuals, referring to Priyanka Gandhi’s remarks following the ED’s arrest of the son of former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel in a separate case.
Trivedi further mocked Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of the Modi government’s foreign policy, particularly his comment about External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
"The one who travels abroad the most has no understanding of foreign policy," Trivedi said, accusing Gandhi of turning India’s China strategy into a "circus."
