Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused the government of enabling “institutional capture” of the Election Commission (EC), claiming that the poll body now directly influences and controls the country’s election system. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Gandhi said he had presented evidence to show how the EC was “colluding with those in power” to shape electoral outcomes, and asserted that such interference undermines the democratic process.
During the Winter Session of Parliament on Tuesday, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, invoked Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy to stress the symbolic and democratic importance of Khadi in India’s nationhood.
Speaking in the House, Rahul Gandhi said, “Have you ever wondered why Mahatma Gandhi placed such emphasis on Khadi? Why did he lead the freedom struggle around the concept of Khadi? Why did he only wear Khadi? It is not just a cloth, it is the expression of the people of India.”
Extending the metaphor, he described India as a collective, democratic tapestry shaped by its citizens. “Our nation is a fabric. It is made up of 1.4 billion people, and the fabric is woven together by the vote,” the Congress MP said, emphasising the importance of protecting democratic institutions and the power of the ballot.
His remarks came amid ongoing debates in the House, as the Winter Session continues with key legislative and political discussions.
