Pune police detained Surendra Kumar Agarwal, the 17-year-old Porsche driver's grandfather who ran over two software engineers. Agarwal is accused of assisting his builder son Vishal Agarwal in escaping, "kidnapping," and pressuring the driver to accept responsibility for the accident.
According to Pune Commissioner, Amitesh Kumar, a driver is allegedly being set up to take responsibility rather than the teenager. He added that soon after the accident, an attempt was made to switch drivers after the crash so that the minor would not land in trouble.
“It is true that at the start the driver had said that he was driving the car. We are investigating this part and also under whose pressure the driver made that statement we are investigating it. Effort was made to change the driver during that period. We are investigating this also,” Kumar had said during a press conference.
The Pune Police Commissioner denied rumours that the driver was in control of the vehicle and said that they had video evidence demonstrating the 17-year-old's driving of the luxury car.
Surendra Agarwal was questioned by the crime branch on Thursday after he stood for the teenager's bail and assured to the juvenile justice board (JJB) that the teenager would make amends.
Surendra Agrawal has been charge-sheeted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which claims that he hired Chhota Rajan in 2009 to kill Shiv Sena corporator Ajay Bhosale.
