Investigators claim she was involved in attempts to mislead the probe, including allegedly trying to replace her son’s blood sample with another person's to falsify medical reports.
The accident occurred in the early hours of May 19, 2024 in Pune’s Kalyaninagar area, when a speeding Porsche, allegedly driven by the 17-year-old son of a prominent city builder, rear-ended a motorbike, killing its two riders on the spot.
The teen, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash, was initially granted bail by the Juvenile Justice Board within 15 hours of the incident, sparking public outrage. The leniency in the bail conditions and the quick release drew criticism from civil society, political leaders, and the victims' families, who questioned the handling of the case.
The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) suspended the licenses of two doctors on Monday after they were arrested for their alleged involvement in tampering with blood samples. Dr. Ajay Taware and Dr. Shrihari Halnor, who were working at the government-run Sassoon General Hospital (SGH), are accused of swapping the blood samples of a juvenile with that of his mother.
"After both doctors were booked for allegedly swapping the juvenile's blood with his mother’s, the MMC took suo motu cognisance and sought an explanation. However, since they are in judicial custody, a personal hearing could not be conducted. Based on committee reports and findings from the Pune Police, the council has suspended their licences pending the final outcome of the case," said Dr Vinky Rughwani, MMC administrator.
"Their licences to practice medicine have been suspended, and they are no longer permitted to treat patients," he added.
In addition to the two doctors, hospital staffer Atul Ghatkamble was also arrested for his role in the alleged blood sample swap, which police claim was intended to hide the presence of alcohol in the teenager’s blood.
While the juvenile has been released from an observation home, ten others, including his parents, the two doctors, Ghatkamble, two alleged middlemen, and three others, remain in judicial custody.
