Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written to Bangladesh interim government chief advisor Muhammad Yunus extending wishes on the neighbouring country's National Day. In the letter, PM Modi highlighted that India-Bangladesh relations are multi-faceted and affirmed commitment to advancing the partnership between the two nations.

"Excellency, I extend my felicitations to you and the people of Bangladesh on the occasion of the National Day of Bangladesh. This day stands as a testament to our shared history and sacrifices, that have laid the foundation of our bilateral partnership," he wrote.

PM Modi's letter comes amid strained ties between the two nations over atrocities against religious minorities in Bangladesh.

"The spirit of the Liberation War of Bangladesh continues to remain a guiding light for our relationship, which has flourished across multiple domains, bringing tangible benefits to our peoples," the letter read.

The Prime Minister asserted that India remains committed to advancing the partnership (with Bangladesh), driven by common aspirations for peace and stability. "We remain committed to advancing this partnership, driven by our common aspirations for peace, stability, and prosperity, and based on mutual sensitivity to each other's interests and concerns. Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration," he added.

Both PM Modi and Yunus are scheduled to take part in the Bimstec summit in Bangkok on April 3-4.

Muhammad Yunus took over as the chief advisor of the interim government in Bangladesh after then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country amid widespread student protests. Dhaka has requested Hasina’s extradition but Delhi has turned it down.

President Droupadi Murmu also extended her greetings to her Bangladesh counterpart Mohammed Shahabuddin. "On behalf of the government, the people of India and my own behalf, I extend warm greetings and felicitations to Your Excellency and to the friendly people of Bangladesh on the occasion of your National Day," she said.
