PM Modi's 'special relationship' with Trump 'totally exposed', says Jairam Ramesh as Asim Munir heads to Washington again

Even as India and the US are wrangling over the new tariff diktat, there are reports coming from across the border that Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir is heading to Washington, his second trip in last 60 days.

Amid the growing murmurs in the power corridors about the upcoming visit, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took a jibe at the Narendra Modi government and mocked PM’s ‘special relationship’ with US President Donald Trump.

The Congress general secretary in-charge of communications took to X and said, “Field Marshal Asim Munir — whose incendiary and inflammatory remarks formed the immediate backdrop to the brutal terror attacks in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025 — appears to be a favourite of the US.”

Talking about how Trump hosted Pakistani Army Chief weeks after Operation Sindoor hostilities, Ramesh further said, “The Pakistan Army Chief is now headed back to America to attend the farewell function of retiring US Central Command Chief Gen. Michael Kurilla — the same Gen. Kurilla who, on June 10, 2025, described Pakistan as ‘a phenomenal partner in counter-terrorism operations.’ What a bizarre certificate this was,”

“Prime Minister Modi has been claiming a special relationship with President Trump. That now stands totally exposed,” Ramesh added, pointing out that since January 2025, the US has neither appointed a regular ambassador to New Delhi nor named a nominee for Senate confirmation — in contrast to other key nations like China.

According to Dawn News, Munir is expected to travel to Washington this week for consultations with top American officials. This will be his second trip to the US since the April conflict. In June, Munir undertook a rare five-day visit during which he attended a private luncheon with Trump — a meeting that culminated in the announcement of enhanced US-Pakistan cooperation in multiple areas, including an oil deal.
