PM Modi leaves for two-day visit to Thailand; to hold talks with counterpart, attend BIMSTEC Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a two-day visit to Thailand on Thursday morning. He will be engaged in bilateral talks with his Thai counterpart, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, and participate in the 6th BIMSTEC Summit on April 4.

PM Modi is expected to receive a grand welcome from the Indian diaspore in Thailand and is scheduled to meet Shinawatra at the Government House, where he will be accorded a ceremonial welcome, PTI reported.

On Thursday evening, the Prime Minister will join the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) leaders from Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar, and Bhutan to oversee the signing of the Agreement on Maritime Cooperation.

The BIMSTEC Summit will bring PM Modi face-to-face with Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli, Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, and Myanmar military junta leader Min Aung Hlaing, among others.

In a departure statement, PM Modi described BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) as a significant forum for promoting regional development, connectivity, and economic progress in the Bay of Bengal region over the past decade.

He highlighted that India’s North Eastern region lies at the heart of BIMSTEC due to its geographical location. “I look forward to meeting the leaders of the BIMSTEC countries and engaging productively to further strengthen our collaboration with the interests of our people in mind,” he added.

PM Modi's visit also comes just a few days after a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck Myanmar and Thailand. Under 'Operation Brahma', India sent relief material and other humanitarian aid to Myanmar as the temblor left thousands dead.

From Thailand, the Prime Minister will depart for a two-day visit to Sri Lanka on April 4.

“This follows the highly successful visit of President Ranil Wickremesinghe to India last December. We will have the opportunity to review progress made on the joint vision of 'Fostering Partnerships for a Shared Future' and provide further guidance to realise our shared objectives,” PM Modi said.

The PM also expressed confidence that these visits would build on the foundations of the past and contribute to strengthening the close relationships for the benefit of the people of these countries and the wider region.
