Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed grief over the lives that have been lost due to landslides that happened on the way to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. He also assured that complete assistance is being provided to those who have been affected by the tragedy.
“The loss of lives due to a landslide on the route to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Temple is saddening. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest. The administration is assisting all those affected. My prayers for everyone’s safety and well-being," PM Modi said on X.
As many as 32 people lost their lives and 20 others were injured in a landslide near Adhkuwari in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district.
Meanwhile, a portion of the Tawi River bridge in Jammu caved in on Tuesday as relentless rains battered the region, leaving several vehicles stranded on the collapsed section and halting traffic completely.
Terrifying visuals from the site show people frantically trying to rescue those trapped in vehicles before the bridge gave way, with some cars dangerously close to being swept away.
A flood alert has been issued for the Jammu region, with residents advised to avoid rivers and nallahs as precautionary measures were stepped up to ensure public safety.
