Prime Minister Narendra Modi has returned to Delhi after completing his visits to China and Japan.
In Japan, PM Modi participated in the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit. Meanwhile, in China, he attended the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin.
The summit featured prominent world leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, showcasing a united front for Global South solidarity. This gathering was particularly significant as it occurred amid the challenges posed by US President Donald Trump's tariff war, which is impacting global trade.
Prime Minister Modi described his visit to China as "productive" in a post on X. He emphasised India's stance on key global issues during his engagements. "I concluded a productive visit to China, where I attended the SCO Summit and interacted with various world leaders. I also highlighted India's stance on key global issues. I am grateful to President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government, and the people for successfully organising this Summit," he wrote.
During his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, PM Modi reaffirmed that cooperation between New Delhi and Moscow is essential for global peace, stability, and prosperity.
At the 25th SCO Summit in Tianjin, which he attended on Monday, the Prime Minister called for increased action against terror financing and radicalisation. He pointed to the Pahalgam terror attack and urged the SCO to hold accountable the countries that perpetrate or support cross-border terrorism. He also congratulated Kyrgyzstan on assuming the SCO presidency.
The Summit facilitated productive discussions on a range of topics, including the SCO Development Strategy, reform of global governance, counter-terrorism, peace and security, economic and financial cooperation, and sustainable development. In his address, PM Modi outlined India's approach to enhancing cooperation within the SCO framework, stressing the importance of actions across three pillars: security, connectivity, and opportunity.
Earlier on Sunday, he held bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the SCO Summit. Both leaders noted the positive momentum in their bilateral relations since their last meeting in Kazan during the BRICS Summit in October 2024. They reaffirmed that India and China are development partners rather than rivals, agreeing that differences should not escalate into disputes. Both leaders called for a stable relationship based on mutual respect, interests, and sensitivity, which is vital for the growth of their nations and for a multipolar world and Asia in the 21st century.
PM Modi also participated in a series of meetings with world leaders at the SCO Summit reception in Tianjin on Sunday, engaging with leaders from Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and Eurasia. He emphasised India's commitment to expanding cooperation across various sectors, with leaders from the Maldives, Nepal, Laos, Vietnam, Armenia, and Turkmenistan in attendance.
Before arriving in China, PM Modi visited Japan from August 29 to 30 for the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit in Tokyo. He praised the outcomes of his Tokyo visit and expressed hope for India-Japan ties to reach new heights in the future.
