Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in Johannesburg

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Johannesburg on Friday to attend the G20 Leaders' Summit being held under South Africa's Presidency. PM Modi arrived at Waterkloof Air Force Base (AFB) in Gauteng, where he was accorded a traditional welcome.

PM Modi is in South Africa on a three-day visit.

On the margins of the summit, the prime minister is expected to hold bilateral meetings with some of the leaders present in Johannesburg. He will also attend the 6th summit of IBSA - a trilateral grouping of India, Brazil and South Africa.

What on his agenda?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to speak across all three main sessions of the G20 Summit, which will focus on inclusive economic growth, climate-related challenges, and the opportunities and risks posed by artificial intelligence.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that he will outline India’s positions on each of these themes.

PM Modi is also scheduled to hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines and will participate in the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Meeting hosted by Pretoria.

"During the visit, I also look forward to my interaction with the Indian expatriates in South Africa, which is one of the largest outside India," the prime minister said.
