India News: Protests held in UP over violence against Hindus in Bangladesh

Protests erupted across several districts of Uttar Pradesh like Budaun, Bareilly, Deoria and Pilibhit on Wednesday as Hindu organisations demonstrated against alleged violence targeting the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh.

Demonstrators called for immediate action to ensure the safety of minorities in Bangladesh and submitted memorandums to local authorities addressed to President Droupadi Murmu.

Similar protests were witnessed in some other parts of the state, including Aligarh, Ayodhya, Banda, Chitrakoot, and Etah, on Tuesday.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "In Assam, we have made the decision that beef will no longer be served in any restaurants, hotels, or at public events and gatherings. From today, the consumption of beef in public places, hotels, restaurants, and community areas will be completely prohibited. Initially, we had planned to stop beef consumption near temples, but now this ban has been extended throughout the entire state."

An encounter occurred between security forces and Naxalites in Narayanpur district, Chhattisgarh, on Wednesday, according to a senior police official. The clash began around 1 pm in the Abujhmad forest area during an anti-Naxal operation by a joint team of security personnel. The operation, which started on Tuesday, involves personnel from the District Reserve Guard (DRG) of Narayanpur and Kondagaon districts, along with the Border Security Force (BSF).

An encounter is currently underway between security forces and Naxalites in the forest area of Abujhmarh, located in Narayanpur district, Chhattisgarh. Further details are awaited.

In the Rajya Sabha, EAM Dr S Jaishankar said "Following the October 21 understanding, Prime Minister and President Xi Jinping had a meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan on October 23. They welcomed the understanding and directed the Foreign Ministers to meet and stabilize and rebuild the relationship. The Special Representatives are also to oversee the management of peace and tranquility besides exploring a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution to the boundary question. In pursuance of that, I recently held discussions with FM Wang Yi again on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro on November 18, 2024."

In the Rajya Sabha, EAM Dr S Jaishankar said "In the lead up to the October 21 agreement, I had discussed both the specific disengagement issue as well as the larger relationship with my Chinese counterpart in Astana on 4 July and Vientiane on 25 July. Our National Security Advisor and his Chinese counterpart also met in St. Petersburg on 12 September. The problem in these two areas pertained primarily to obstructions of our long-standing patrolling activity. In Demchok, there was also the question of access by our nomadic population to traditional grazing grounds, as well as to sites of significance to the local people. As a result of this recent understanding arrived at after intensive negotiations, resumption of patrolling to the traditional areas is underway. It was initially tested by sending out patrols for verification of disengagement on the ground and is being followed up by regular activities as per the agreed understanding."

In the Rajya Sabha, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated that China continues to illegally occupy 38,000 sq. km of Indian territory in Aksai Chin, a result of the 1962 conflict. He also pointed out that Pakistan had unlawfully ceded 5,180 sq. km of Indian territory to China, which has been under Chinese control since 1948. Jaishankar reaffirmed the government's commitment to engage with China through bilateral talks to find a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution for boundary settlement.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, in a statement to the Rajya Sabha, stressed that peace and tranquillity are essential for normalising India-China relations. He further mentioned that both countries have agreed not to alter the status quo at the international border.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced in the Lok Sabha that an investment of Rs 73,000 crore has been allocated for rail development in Odisha.

Vaishnaw also mentioned the Rail Bill would be discussed later in the day, adding the importance of keeping the Question Hour efficient. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla urged members to ask brief questions and provide concise answers to allow the completion of the 20-question list during the session.

The Supreme Court is set to hear petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991 today.
