Purnea MP Pappu Yadav, responding to a question on what would happen if Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav becomes the chief minister after the Bihar polls, said, “He will either kill me or I will run away from Bihar.”
Yadav made the remarks during an interaction with News18.
Reacting to what he called as a “sensational statement”, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya said that it was not an “ordinary” remark and that it “exposes the true face of Tejashwi’s politics”.
“The people of Bihar must decide whether they want development or an atmosphere of fear,” Malviya wrote further.
Pappu Yadav’s allegation that Tejashwi Yadav’s elevation to the role of chief minister would endanger his life is serious -- with potential implications for both Tejashwi’s reputation and the RJD’s public standing.
The rift between Pappu Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav has been a longstanding feature of Bihar politics. It intensified during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when Congress’ alliance partner RJD nominated Bima Bharti from the Purnia seat -- despite Pappu Yadav’s intention to contest from there on a Congress ticket.
Yadav later went on to win the polls from Purnea as an independent candidate.
Election in Bihar is scheduled to be held later this year in October or November, however, an official announcement over the date is yet to be made.
Pappu Yadav’s remarks come at a time when the Opposition has been criticising the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar.
The Opposition has criticised the voter list revision exercise, claiming it risks the disenfranchisement of millions, particularly migrant workers and economically vulnerable citizens who may struggle to meet document requirements. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has maintained that the SIR is a routine, court-monitored process and that 99 per cent of eligible electors have already been covered.
Earlier, speaking to ANI, Pappu Yadav asserted that if no action is taken on the exercise in Bihar, then they all should resign from the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha and let the government run the House on its own.
"When something happens beyond the Constitution, then Parliament has the right to amend it, discuss it, and interfere in it. If the Election Commission becomes unbridled, then the Supreme Court will also intervene... When they realised they were not going to win the elections, they took SIR as an excuse... EC is speaking BJP's language... If no action is taken, we should all resign from the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha and let the government run the house on its own," he said.
