Pakistan army chief Asim Munir reportedly issued nuclear threats against India while visiting the United States, according to The Print.
He reportedly warned that Islamabad would "take half the world down" if faced with an existential threat from New Delhi. At a dinner in Tampa hosted by businessman and honorary consul Adnan Asad, Munir told attendees, "We are a nuclear nation. If we think we are going down, we’ll take half the world down with us."
This is the Pakistan army chief’s second visit to the US this year. In June, Munir travelled to the US on a rare five-day trip during which he attended a private luncheon with President Donald Trump, an unprecedented gesture typically reserved for visiting heads of state or government.
The meeting culminated in Trump's announcement of enhanced US-Pakistan cooperation in various fields, including an oil deal.
According to ThePrint, Munir was in the US to attend the retirement ceremony of General Michael Kurilla, outgoing commander of the United States Central Command (CENTCOM).
He also raked up the Indus Water Treaty issue. “We will wait for India to build a dam, and when it does so, phir 10 missile sey faarigh kar dengey (we will destroy it with 10 missiles),” ThePrint reported him as saying at the dinner. The report further quoted Munir as saying, “The Indus river is not the Indians’ family property. Humein missilon ki kami nahi hai (we have no shortage of missiles).”
India put on hold the over 60-year-old Indus Waters Treaty following the brutal terror attack in South Kashmir's Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives on April 22. India also initiated Operation Sindoor on May 7 as a punitive and targeted campaign to dismantle the terror infrastructure across the Line of Control and deeper inside Pakistan.
Munir also took a dig at India's “reluctance” to disclose its losses in Operation Sindoor. “The Indians should accept their losses,” he said, adding that Pakistan was open to making its own war losses public if India did the same.
However, Pakistan’s military chief ended up exposing his country’s true standing in relation to India. "India is a shining Mercedes coming on a highway like Ferrari, but we are a dump truck full of gravel. If the truck hits the car, who is going to be the loser?" Munir reportedly said this at a Pakistani community event in Florida, according to Times of India.
He reportedly took note of India's recent diplomatic tensions with the US amid the Trump tariffs row. "The real reason for our success is that we are not misers. If someone does good work, we praise and appreciate them. That is why we nominated President Donald Trump for the Nobel Prize," Munir said.
Pakistan's bilateral trade with the US currently stands at around $10 billion compared to India's $135 billion.
Munir was in Florida to attend the retirement ceremony of US CENTCOM Commander General Michael Kurilla, who on July 26 was awarded the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, one of Pakistan's top honours, for his role in pivoting American interest back to the country.
